Emmy is SIX!

My Emmy,

6! WOW. What joy you’ve added to our lives these past years!

We got to have a party for you this year! Due to the pandemic, we haven’t been able to do that since you turned three.

This year you wrapped up preschool and started Kindergarten! This is the first school year you’ve experienced school without wearing a mask. You ride the bus like a champ and have even occasionally navigated it without your big sister to guide you.

You are making friends and expanding your social skills. You even got invited to your first friend birthday party and had a lovely afternoon hanging out with Princess Aurora, eating snacks and making your own unicorn cat stuffy.

Outside of school, you are involved with scouts and soccer.

You love hanging out with your cousins and it makes my heart so happy that you have a built-in bestie!

Now that you are six, we let you play Roblox with Iris, Kosmy and Aza. It is so funny to hear you guys chase each other around in your little virtual game space. And Roblox helps keep you connected when sickness or busy weeks keep you away from each other. Once you missed your cousins so much that you made felt versions of them to play with.

Your art and creativity astound me. I love the things your hands and mind create so much.

Though the acquisition of Yodas has slowed, your love for our favorite green alien is stronger than ever. We even celebrated Yarn Yoda’s 1st birthday over the summer!

And you had such a reputation for Yoda culture at pre-school that the director of the program even bought you wall decals.

This year your inherited my vintage troll collection and made them feel right at home.

You lost your first tooth! It was a bit dramatic because Mommy accidentally dropped it down the drain when cleaning it off. But Daddy was able to take the pipes apart and retrieve it. But still, you were pretty emotional about giving it up to the Tooth Fairy. Iris transcribed a note to the Tooth Fairy on your behalf and happily, you got to keep the tooth AND the cash!

In December, Grandpa donned his Yoda ski mask and cicada oven mitt wings, as per usual, and was getting ready to chase the kids when you took off and flew through the kitchen slamming your forehead into a corner. Blood gushing and tears flowing, you made your way over to me. (Amazingly, we got zero blood on Nana’s carpet!) When we got you cleaned up enough to see what we were dealing with, I decided that you probably needed stitches and we needed to go to Children’s. No stranger to Children’s Hospital but new to the world of emergency stitches, you were not happy. Graciously, Aunt Amanda drove us so I could stay with you in the back and try to keep the blood gushing minimal. You were brave. We watched a movie and tried to keep you as entertained as possible. You received three stitches, a band-aid and a popsicle.

We left in good spirits but the return to school on Monday did not go so smoothly. You were nervous and embarrassed about the band aid. You didn’t want people asking and commenting and talking about you. Turns out, another kid whacked his face the same weekend and also had a band aid! The teacher talked about both and it wasn’t so bad. What luck! When the band aid came off and the wound began to heal, Iris comforted you by saying you were cool because you had a scar just like Harry Potter! I am grateful for that little extension of kindness from your sister because from then on out, you saw it in a different light and you were proud of it.

Emmy, your entire being operates in a different light and I am proud of YOU. Your wit, your humor, your smiles — the way you extend love and kindness and empathy to everything from the orange peel headed to the compost to the lucky people in your life. It is inspiring and it makes me proud to be your Mom. I love you so very much.

Love,

Mom
